About
Milestones 2000 is infinitely better than any other type of solitaire card game. Heck, if Microsoft had included this with Windows 3.1, I'd be a Wintel user now!
Maybe not. Anyway, the aim of Milestones is reach either 1500 or 2000 kilometres (interesting, wasn't Ken Franklin from the U.S?). You can only play against the computer, although at the time, that was a sensible decision given that networking wasn't quite so prevalent as it is today. This game could be remade to be played over the net with a chat feature.
But I digress. Again. Travelling to your destination is determined by the deck of cards. You need a 'GO' card before you can even start to move, and the distance you travel is determined by the card you use, which can be travelling a distance of 50, 100, 150, 200 or 400 kilometres in a turn. Other cards can be used on the computer, like giving it a flat tire, a smash, run out of fuel or a 100km/h speed limit. These cards can also be dished out by you and the computer has no mercy. There are also special cards, cards which can make you immune to the hazards your opponent throws at you.
The game is played with the mouse and is very easy to pick up the rules of the game as you play thanks to dialogue messages. If for instance you want to start moving and you have a 'GO' card simply drag it onto your blue car. If you want your opponent to meet with an accident, drag the flat tire card onto his car. The computer will let you know what illegal moves you try to make and why you can't make them.
The game was designed to run with System 5.02 and up, but also plays a treat with System 6.01.
Network Version (2026). The second line of that old write-up got its wish. Milestones 2000 Network Version adds a second human player: two IIGS owners anywhere with a CoGS card pick Network Game from the Game menu, type a name, and the Game Room lobby at lobby.a2cogs.com seats them at the same table. Both machines run the full game from a shared seed, so only the moves cross the wire, and the card does the HTTPS with nothing else installed on the GS. Your opponent's name shows in the hazard messages and on the score sheet, and rally wins and best scores go on the lobby leaderboard. Two friends can match each other instead of the public queue with a line such as code ROB-JOE in a text file named MSNET next to the program. Without a card, or with nobody waiting, it plays against the computer as always.
The network download is a 32 MB 2IMG hard drive image with System 6.0.1 trimmed to what the game needs; it boots straight into Milestones. CoGS owners can stream the same image from the card's disk catalog. On a streamed (read-only) volume the Hall of Fame and saved game do not persist and the game asks your name each launch. The network layer was written in ORCA/Pascal inside Ken's original source, and the lobby contract, card protocol and Milestones network code are published for other developers at github.com/rperissi/cogs-gameroom.
